The spiritual way of purifying the heart

The heart in the emotional and spiritual sense is a vessel for emotions that guide people in their day to day life. However, this same facet can also lead a person to be more removed from their emotions. According to Dr. Ibrahim Jaffe, in the Sufi world, one can be trapped in the way of the Nafs. This means being in the ego of a personality. This, in turn, lets one experience separation, emotional suffering, mental confusion, and a lack of guidance.

Looking at the heart through the deep eye, you would see that the reason why people are cut off is that they have allowed veils to cover their hearts. People may have different types of veils that cover their hearts. There are veils of hatred, veils of fear, or veils of people who have affected them, as well as veils of past experiences. Regardless of the veil, these are what cuts people from experiencing the divine experiences of the heart.

The divine experiences of the heart is that of beauty, transcendence, knowledge, and wisdom. It is a deep sense of knowing and guidance of who you are, where you are going, and what life asks of you. What veils do is limit your perception to the divine, which is why purifying the heart is necessary for people to experience the divine once more.

For this to happen, purification must be done to quell the anger, the hurt, the jealousy, the veils that prevent a person from experiencing the divine. One such way of purifying the heart is by going deeper within oneself to find the memories that have caused the creation of these veils. This process unravels problems from the present time going back to the root causes. Dr. Ibrahim Jaffe believes that pinpointing that singular moment where you shut down your connection to the divine is necessary for you to understand the cause of your veil and to purify it all together.
